Planning a Spring Break at Home

Spring Break time is coming up quick! We are not going anywhere this year but rather are planning to stay at home.  Being at home for a whole week without school requires some planning to keep everyone happy (and mommy sane).  This year I asked my children to write down (or tell me) what 5 things they would like to do over Spring Break.  I told them that we would plan to do at least 1 thing that each of them had picked.  We made a list of some fun things to do and I thought I would share it so you can get some ideas too.  Keep in mind that I have 6 kids and they range in age from 2 to 12.  Not all of these activities are suitable for all ages.

  • Picnic at the park and play on the playground
  • Visit a local art museum (check their website because many of them offer Spring Break discounts and free days)
  • Make or buy snow cones
  • Go see a movie
  • Ice Skating
  • Pick a craft to do and shop for materials and make it (in our case we are going to learn to sew simple pillows and make hair clip flowers)
  • Pajama Day combined with popcorn and renting movies
  • Make cookies and take them to local heroes (firemen, police men, hand them to the mail man, etc…)
  • Spend a little time talking about how each one would like their room decorated and go get one item towards that goal.
  • Go to local Farmers Market and pick some new things to try
  • Plant your own flowers or herbs Day
  • Have a scavenger hunt in the neighborhood
  • Baking/cooking class (making a favorite treat or simple meal)
  • Write and illustrate your own book
  • Go to the Library. Then have a contest to see who can read the most pages in a day (the younger ones can do picture books or have books read to them)
  • Kids in charge Day (this one takes a brave mom!)
  • Art time: drawing, painting, clay or play dough. For the little ones, making letters or shapes with their fingers on a plate of rice or shaving cream.
  • Taking stuff to the consignment store and picking a few new things (my kids surprisingly love this!  It is a good way for us to clean out the old and update their Spring/Summer wardrobes)

Obviously we are picking and choosing only a few of these to do.   I am excited to have a plan and go into the week looking forward to each day with the kids.  We will still have nap/quiet time every day to make sure that the little ones (and mommy) don’t get too worn out.

I hope you have a wonderful Spring Break when your turn comes!  I would LOVE to hear any other ideas you have to fill the days!!
