What Moms Love Weekly

This has been a full week for me! I had some sick kids and that always throws things off a bit.  I am grateful for the weekend though! This week I am loving: being okay with taking care of myself, encouraging new moms to give themselves grace, 3 year old giggles, cool breezes, playtime at the park and new sweet treats that this gluten-free girl can eat {smile}.  How about you? What are you loving this week?

Here are a few finds this week that get Mommy Kudos

1. Morgan & Milo Espadrilles- I mentioned Morgan & Milo shoes last week but then this week I saw these adorable espadrilles for little girls I thought they were too cute.  I really like the Morgan & Milo brand for both boys and girls because, aside from having some of the cutest kids shoes ever, these shoes really last.  They are very worth the investment in my opinion. My kids say they are super comfortable too. So cuteness, comfort and holding up through lots of little kid roughness gets my vote for great kid shoes.

2. Piggy Paint Nail Pens– My daughter and I tried these out this week and these nail pens are great! Piggy Paint makes polish that is “Natural as mud” without all of the harsh chemicals making them safer for little girls hands (especially when the little girls who are still putting their fingers in their mouths).  These nail pens are super easy to use and make painting little fingers and toes quick and easy.  Just use a blow dryer for a minute to dry them once you are done.  I found that Piggy Paint lasts longer than traditional nail polish too!

3. Next Direct Clothing–  I have to admit that I have a thing for European style kids clothing.  There are some great companies that have expanded to the USA that have really cute clothes (and great clothing for moms too).  I really like Next Direct.  They have great styles for babies, kids and adults! I love their boy styles and sweet girly dresses.  If you haven’t ever checked them out you should.  They’re prices are pretty good too.

Tips For First-Time Mothers

Women pregnant for the first time are often anxious about becoming mothers. After all, the role is probably one of the most important they’ll ever have. They will be responsible for all facets of their child’s life for years, including physical, mental and emotional well-being, financial security and more. Just as important is the need for women to take care of themselves; a healthy and relatively stress-free mother is better able to care for her child. Here are seven tips for transitioning to motherhood.

1. It’s a learning experience. Women do not have to know everything about motherhood, as there are different styles and methods that other mothers will utilize. Learning to trust her natural maternal instinct will help a mother develop as her child develops.
2. Take first things first. Women should take the months of pregnancy to learn not only about the labor and delivery process, but also about how to care for their infant in the first days and months of her life. Women should learn about breastfeeding versus bottle-feeding, using car seats, handling sleeping needs and trying soothing techniques. A mother should also ask her doctor about options like umbilical cord blood banking; a process where a newborn’s valuable cord blood is collected following birth and stored in case it is ever needed to potentially help treat a medical condition down the road.
3. Schedule baby’s first wellness visit. Also, mothers need to know when it is important to call for a sick visit. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers a printable guide called “When to Call the Baby’s Doctor” to help mothers know when baby is truly sick.
4. Prioritize the essentials. In the first weeks of motherhood, mothers are tired and they and their baby are learning to live together. Working moms should talk to their employer about how much time they can take off. They should also ask someone to handle housework so they can concentrate on the baby. Even if no one is staying over, new moms should make motherhood their top priority and let other things go.
5. Self care is important. Women will do their baby no favors by sacrificing their own health to such an extent that they cannot cope as a mother. Motherhood is certainly about sacrifice, and women will put baby’s needs above their own, but they need to take care of their own health, too.
6. Read up on parenting techniques. Moms can look online, check out books or magazines and ask the pediatrician for tips about their baby’s development. They should learn what kinds of behaviors and abilities their child will progress through so they are prepared to parent him accordingly.
7. Balance work and family. Working mothers should ask their employer about flexible scheduling and any other ways to ease back into work. While pregnant, they should plan who will take care of baby when they return to work. Sometimes a relative in town will babysit for the first year or so. Many mothers instead call a day care center; most have long waiting lists, so women should call when they are pregnant to make sure she has access to the service when she needs it.

As women transition into this new phase of life, they should take time to cherish the good moments.  As long as baby’s basic needs are addressed, moms should relax. He’ll grow up more quickly than they realize, so moms should enjoy these early days of motherhood.

Reminding Moms to Take Care of Themselves {& a $25 Amazon.com Giveaway to help}

As I mentioned in my earlier post today I’ve decided to start a weekly post that is dedicated to helping moms remember to take good care of themselves.

As a busy mom of 6 I often forget to set aside time, and even money, to take care of myself, but I have realized that when I don’t it hurts me and it hurts those in my care.  So I hope to encourage you, as I am learning myself, to take care of your self without guilt.  Motherhood is a long journey and you need to be strong and ready for it.

Join me each week for “Taking Care of yourself Tuesdays.” We’ll discuss ways to set aside time and take better care of ourselves.

To kick it off I thought a giveaway would be fun! How about $25 to spend at Amazon.com on something that is just for you?  You can buy a new workout DVD, some new makeup, some great smelling lotion, a good book or two, or Downton Abbey on DVD (warning: you will be addicted if you start watching!).

Taking Care of Yourself Tuesday: Summer’s Coming! A Mom’s Guide to Getting In Shape

I’ve decided to start a weekly post that is dedicated to helping moms remember to take good care of themselves.

As a busy mom of 6 I often forget to set aside time, and even money, to take care of myself, but I have realized that when I don’t it hurts me and it hurts those in my care.  So I hope to encourage you, as I am learning myself, to do things that rejuvenate yourself.  Motherhood is a long journey and you need to be strong and ready for it.

I don’t know about you but when the first warm days show up in Spring I start thinking about how Summer is right around the corner and how hot it will be.  Hot weather means I want to wear a lot less clothing and that makes me start thinking about how I am going to look in shorts and tank tops.  You think about that too right?

It’s a challenge for a mom to find time to fit in a workout and take care of herself but it is vitally important.  We’re not just talking about how you look here but how you feel and your health.  Exercise and eating right are key for you to have energy and stay healthy to be able to take care of your kids the best way possible.  It’s never selfish for you to take care of yourself physically and it sets a great example to your kids of what a healthy person does.

No matter what shape you are in it is possible to loose weight and tone up in time for Summer.  For the Past 6 weeks my husband and I have been doing the Power 90 workouts and I have seen amazing results! I love that they are short (30-45 minutes a day).  It is a good intense workout but you slowly work up to it and after a couple weeks you’ll start to feel stronger and see muscle definition.  I really like that this is a complete body workout which tones you all over.

Power 90 has both a cardio workout and a sculpting workout with weights or bands.  You alternate these each day and the cardio workout includes a section to focus on your abs.

Some other workouts that I like for busy moms are:

  • Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred which progresses you through a body sculpting workout that also builds your stamina and fitness level over the course of 30 days.
  • Zumba is also a fun workout if you like to dance but it is a bit longer and lots of cardio without using any weights.
  • Power Yoga with Adrienne Reed is a great yoga series if you like yoga.  You can choose each day from a 20, 40 or 60 minute session in each of the DVDs which are Flexibility, Core Power and Fat Burning.

So are you getting ready for Summer yet? What are your favorite workouts?

Annie’s New Rising Crust Pizza {Win One to Try}

We have a semi-weekly pizza night in our family.  Usually I will make the pizza myself to make sure the ingredients are healthy but sometimes I just want something quick to pop in the oven. So when Moms Meet contacted me about trying out Annies’s new certified organic rising crust pizza I was happy to do so.

We have been fans of Annie’s products for years now.  If you need quick and easy meals (and what mom doesn’t at one time or another?) but still want to serve healthy food then Annie’s is a great option!  We also really love their snack foods for after school or on the go!

We baked the new organic rising crust pizza and it smelled amazing!  Everyone dug in while it was still warm and agreed it tasted just as good as some of our favorite pizza restaurants.  My kids LOVED it and have since asked for it on several occasions!  The crust, in particular, was a huge hit and knowing that it has 8g of whole grains per serving made me feel good about serving it to my family.

I think you will find Annie’s rising crust pizza to be better than other frozen pizza options both in taste and in health.  Annie’s uses 100% real cheese, made with milk from cows not treated with the growth hormone rBST*.  Annie’s pizza also features meats with no nitrates or nitrites added (except for naturally occurring nitrates in sea salt or celery juice powder).

Annie’s Rising Crust Pizza is available in four flavors, including Uncured Pepperoni, Four Cheese, Supreme, and Spinach & Mushroom. They are all ready to eat in 25 minutes or less with a crispier or softer crust depending on how you bake it.

Would you like to WIN some Annie’s certified organic Rising Crust Pizza to try?  3 lucky winners will each receive a coupon for a free Annie’s pizza! To enter fill out the Rafflecopter form below.  If you are reading this in an email or in a feed reader then click here to enter.
